Pakistan: Downward Trend Continues in the Cotton Market

Business Recorder – Naseem Usman: Domestic cotton prices kept falling, pressured by weaker New York futures and declining quality of local cotton, with spinners cautious about buying. Cotton in Sindh and Punjab traded at Rs16,000–18,000 per maund and Balochi cotton at Rs18,700–19,000, while seed cotton ranged from Rs7,000 to Rs9,000 per 40 kg. The Karachi Cotton Association cut its spot rate by Rs200 to Rs17,800 per maund, while higher freight and regional tensions raised import costs. The State Bank of Pakistan raised its policy rate by 50 basis points to 12%, despite industry calls for a cut, and an electricity tariff increase is expected. Proposals for reviving the sector include a Rs15–20 billion annual cotton programme and a minimum support price of Rs10,000 per 40 kg of seed cotton.

China: Cotton Under Pressure as Inventories Surge and Mills Cut Back

Commodity Board Europe: China's cotton market came under clear downward pressure in October, with spot 3128B lint slipping about 3.2% to roughly RMB 16,845/t by October 29 and January Zhengzhou futures falling about 3.8% over the month to about RMB 15,170/t. Commercial stocks rose from about 1.77 million tonnes at the end of September to about 2.91 million tonnes by October 23, mostly in Xinjiang, where more than 90% of the crop had been picked in broadly favourable weather. Machine-picked seed cotton in Xinjiang averaged about RMB 7.33/kg in October 19–25, some 16.7% above a year earlier, but higher procurement costs gave little support to lint. Spinning mills were running at about 69% of capacity and weaving mills at about 35%, and a lasting recovery would require stronger yarn orders and a drawdown in stocks, so prices are expected to remain capped in the short term.

China: September Cotton Yarn Exports Post First Year-on-Year Rise

CCFGroup: China exported 19,500 tonnes of cotton yarn in September, up 0.19% year on year and 20.94% from August, the first annual increase after a series of declines, driven by seasonal restocking and stronger orders from Vietnam and Cambodia. January–September exports, however, were still 13.81% lower at 146,800 tonnes. Shipments to Pakistan, still the top destination, fell 33.74%, while those to Vietnam rose 24.69% and to Cambodia 34.89%. Demand shifted toward coarser yarns, with combed 8.2–25s up 103.5% and combed 54.8–66s down 36.7%. The durability of overseas restocking and the impact of new-crop cotton on China's export competitiveness are the points to watch.

Togo: Seed Cotton and Input Prices Held Steady for 2026/27 Despite Rising Costs

Ecofin Agency – Ayi Renaud Dossavi: Togo will keep seed cotton purchase prices unchanged in 2026/27 at CFA 300/kg for first grade and CFA 280/kg for second grade, according to a joint statement by the cotton company NSCT and the national producers' federation FNGPC. Subsidised input prices are also unchanged, with a 50-kg bag of NPKSB fertiliser or urea at CFA 14,000, despite higher international fertiliser and pesticide costs linked to geopolitical tensions and energy prices. The government has earmarked CFA 5.8 billion in 2026 to supply 21,000 tonnes of fertiliser to the sector, 15% more than in 2025. Togo targets 105,000 tonnes of seed cotton from 105,000 hectares, and by the end of July farmers had planted 115,980 hectares, 10.5% above target.
