U.S.: Bollgard Technology Celebrates 30 Years

Farm Progress – Whitney Shannon: Bollgard, the Bt technology commercially released by Monsanto in 1996 and now a Bayer product, was the answer to a crisis in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the tobacco budworm had become uncontrollable across the Cotton Belt. Together with boll weevil eradication, it created a pest management system that let growers exploit the full season length and improve fruit retention, says Bayer entomologist Jay Mahaffey. Key milestones included the "triple nickel" Deltapine 555 BG/RR variety in 2003, Bollgard II in 2005, Deltapine 1646, which became the most widely planted variety in modern times, and later Bollgard 3 and ThryvOn technology.

EURATEX will bring its manufacturing network to the Circularity Blueprint launched by GFA earlier this year, and the two will hold joint events, starting with one on incentives for circular business models.

Uzbekistan: Record Seed Cotton Harvest Above 5 Million Tonnes

UzDaily: Uzbekistan harvested a record of more than 5 million tonnes of seed cotton, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said, with the average yield rising from 21 to 56 centners per hectare. About 400,000 hectares averaged 70 centners and some 70,000 hectares reached 100–110 centners per hectare. The gains are attributed to changes in planting patterns, two to three times higher plant populations, new biotech varieties resistant to bollworm and herbicides, digitalisation and drones. About 85% of the crop was picked mechanically by more than 3,000 harvesters, cotton area has fallen 38% in recent years and water use is half the 1990s level. The target for 2027 is 65–70 centners per hectare.

Africa: Cotton Partners Launch Drive for Textile and Garment Investment

WTO: The Cotton Partnership (PPC), co-convened by the WTO and UNIDO with partners including the ITC, ICAC, ILO, ITFC and Afreximbank, has launched an investment drive to help the C-4+ countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali and Côte d'Ivoire) move from exporting raw lint to garment manufacturing. A UNIDO and ITC assessment identified potential investment of $12 billion over ten years, including $5 billion from the private sector, which could create about 500,000 direct jobs for women and youth and 1.5 million indirect jobs. More than ten bankable projects have already been prepared, and UNIDO will target investors in China and Türkiye through the Africa Textile Invest platform. The first spinning mills and garment factories in the region are the target outcome.
