U.S. Cotton Area Rises

WASHINGTON - June 30/26 - SNS --All cotton planted area for 2026 is estimated at 9.85 million acres, up 6% from last year, according to the USDA's seeded area estimates for 2026.

Upland area is estimated at 9.70 million acres, up 6% from 2025. American Pima area is estimated at 150,000 acres, up 6% from 2025. If realized, Arizona and New Mexico planted upland cotton acres will be record lows.

Producers planted 94% of their acreage with seed varieties developed using biotechnology, down 3 percentage points from last year. Varieties containing insect resistance (Bt) were planted on 4% of the acreage, unchanged from 2025. Herbicide resistant varieties were planted on 8% of the acreage, up 2 percentage points from last year. Stacked gene varieties, those containing both insect and herbicide resistance, were planted on 82% of the acreage, down 5 percentage points from a year ago.
