Tanzania: NGO Supports Contract Cotton Farming

Mwanza — THE Tanzania Cotton Board (TCB) in collaboration with the Tanzania Gatsby Trust (TGT) is working on setting up an information system for contract farming in the cotton industry.

The project is to be executed under the Pamba Network (PambaNet) project. The PambaNet information communication Technology (ICT) project Manager, Mr James Mungai, told the Daily News in Mwanza that TCB and TGT would facilitate information for cotton production and Marketing to farmers to enable them boost cotton output.

"We are serious to promote contract farming to become effective in cotton growing Zone and this can be possible through the support of TGT who is a catalyst for SMEs and Farmer development," said Mr Mungai.

Mr Mungai said that through Pambanet there were benefits of shared information owing to cost-efficiency and accurate data that facilitates ginners in mitigating transaction and lending costs.

He noted that farmers in contract farming become aware of cost effective investment in enhanced productivity as well as regulator enhanced resource allocation. Predominantly this information benefits lead to timely and valid registration of loan extension and enhanced investment decisions.

The PambaNet project Manager called upon local governments o implement pro-investment policy and say regulatory support for PambaNet is a part of that policy.
