COTTON AUSTRALIA PARTICIPATES IN NATIONAL TRACEABILITY PROJECT

Modelling shows broader traceability and biosecurity could increase agricultural production by $1 billion a year.

To this end, the Federal Department of Agriculture and Water Resources has embarked upon a National Traceability Project in consultation with industry.Cotton Australia’s Sarah Clarry recently joined representatives from Australia’s other agricultural industries in a Co-design Workshop designed to give stakeholders input into the design of a national framework.

Approximately 70 per cent of Australia's agricultural produce is exported and effective traceability systems are critical for access to these export markets. The goal of the Traceability project is to enhance trust in Australian-grown products and give agricultural producers a competitive edge in an environment that is increasingly demanding further assurances on agricultural product claims.

The aim is to develop the framework by January 2019. An Action Plan will then be developed by mid-2019.
