Since 2017/18, the company gives the opportunity to groups of farmers to use its facilities for ginning their cotton independently. This is an innovative but also very hopeful program.
The cotton of these groups is stored and ginned separately. The bales produced are sold with a contract by Thrakika Ekkokkistiria, at a good price. The company retains a small commission for its services and the rest of the profit belongs to the farmers.
Therefore, the price that the farmers will be paid depends on the quality, the lint yield and when they will fix the price through the Futures Market.
Since the ginned cotton belongs to the farmers, the groups place great attention to quality, from start to final delivery. From the variety they will select up to the final moisture content of the crop.
In 2018/19 the group that was created received the highest price given for Greek cotton that we know of. The group achieved this because they made the right decisions as to when to fix the prices through the Futures Market, but mainly because they delivered cotton with very high lint yield and really good quality.
For 2019/20, the same group wanted to receive more information on how they can achieve even better quality and higher lint yield. The company organized a presentation where all the factors playing an important role were analyzed.
When farmers are interested and want to learn more about how to produce higher-value cotton, Greek cotton has a future!
