U.S. Cotton: A Quiet Session Leaves Traders in Suspense
Calcot (Cindy Walters): December traded inside Monday's range and settled at 82.87 cents, leaving traders unsure whether Monday's rally marked a change of direction or Tuesday's slippage was a resumption of the downtrend. Volume fell to 52,195 contracts and open interest declined for the first time in five sessions to 381,840 contracts — still close to record levels; through September it has moved in a band of barely 5,000 contracts while December swung across a 1,243-point range, unusual for such large price moves. December again closed above its 100-day moving average, though its daily low has dipped below that level for four straight sessions. The Dec/March spread settled at a contract-high 270 points March premium for a third consecutive session. Xi arrives in Washington on Wednesday, with the state visit beginning Thursday, and the Nasdaq set a record high on hopes the meeting will open wider U.S.-China dialogue on AI. Crude oil fell for a fifth straight session, down 10.15% over that stretch on hopes of improved supply and progress toward restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. China's State Reserve sold its entire 8,050-tonne offering at the 48th auction — the 42nd sell-out — taking cumulative sales to about 1.68 million bales. Certified stocks fell to 29,556 bales, the lowest since late January.

China: Australian Cotton Keeps the Top Spot in August Imports
CCFGroup: China imported 80,500 tonnes of cotton in August, up 7,800 tonnes year-on-year but down 11,100 tonnes from July, bringing January-August imports to 1.11 million tonnes — an 88.9% jump on the same period last year. Australia dominated with 60,000 tonnes, or 74% of the total, ahead of the U.S. at 7,000 tonnes and Brazil at 5,800 tonnes, with Brazilian volumes down both on the year and the month. The average import price was 86.7 cents/lb, but origins differed sharply: U.S. cotton came in at 101.5 cents/lb, Australian at 87.7, Brazilian at 76.4 and Afghan at 52.7. U.S. volumes remain constrained by tariffs and quotas. Shandong took 43% of imports, ahead of Jiangsu at 22%. CCFGroup expects imports to stabilise in September with Australia still leading.

Brazil: Cotton-to-Cotton Recycling Scales Up Inside an Integrated Textile Hub
Textile Today: Brazilian retailer Riachuelo has launched Guara Circular, northeast Brazil's first industrial-scale textile recycling hub, built around the cotton waste its own production network generates. The unit combines waste separation, fibre opening and spinning at a plant that makes about 40% of Riachuelo's merchandise and is Latin America's largest integrated textile facility. It has already turned 181 tonnes of textile waste into new yarn and plans to reuse more than 1.2 million kg of pure-cotton cutting scraps, with a first collection of over 41,000 garments including jeans made of 100% cotton with 25% recycled fibre. Mechanical recycling cuts dependence on virgin fibre but shortens fibres with each pass, and blends, elastane contamination and uneven waste quality complicate the process. Brazil's textile recycling market is estimated at about $169.2 million in 2026, with cotton its largest segment; the harder step will be moving from controlled factory waste to post-consumer textiles.

China: New-Crop Procurement Costs Set to Anchor Fourth-Quarter Prices
SunSirs: Zhengzhou cotton briefly topped 17,000 yuan/tonne in late August on expectations of heat-reduced Xinjiang output and firmer reserve auction prices, then fell roughly 7% from its early-September peak as the new crop approached, reserves kept flowing and the Federal Reserve raised rates to 3.75%-4.00%. Internationally, ICE cotton hit a more than two-year high on U.S. drought and declining crop ratings before retreating when the September WASDE production cut fell short of expectations and the dollar strengthened. USDA now sees 2026/27 world output at 25.543 million tonnes, down 1.008 million on the year, with U.S. production at 2.87 million tonnes on a drought-hit yield of 57.2 kg/mu and ending stocks of 784,000 tonnes. In China, Xinjiang's planted area is down about 3.4% and national output is estimated at 7.42 million tonnes, 4.6% lower than last year. Opening seed cotton prices have jumped: 8.41 yuan/kg for hand-picked cotton in southern Xinjiang and a projected 7.2-7.5 yuan/kg for machine-picked, against 6.2 yuan/kg last year. Downstream, the peak season has disappointed — spinning mills are running at about 70.1% and weaving mills at just 37.36%, inland spinners are losing 1,200 yuan/tonne, and yarn stocks have reached a five-year high of 32.12 days. August clothing retail sales fell 0.5% year-on-year while textile and apparel exports rose 7.69% to $28.568 billion, leaving prices likely to range-trade until new-crop costs are confirmed.

U.S. Cotton: Industry Sees Demand Stirring for the New Crop
RFD-TV: Roger Isom, president and CEO of the California Cotton Ginners and Growers Association, says upland prices and demand have both picked up, though pima remains very slow and the recovery still has a long way to go. He points to a smaller carryover, noting that what is left is mostly lower-quality cotton, which he expects to support demand for the higher grades in the new crop. U.S. cotton prices are projected to rise about 22% this season, with planted area up roughly 13% to more than 10 million acres.
