BAMAKO, April 5 (Reuters) - Mali's cotton production fell last season and missed government targets as heavy rains damaged crops, the Malian Company for the Development of Textiles (CMDT) said on Tuesday.

Raw cotton production for the season ending March 31 fell to 513,552 tonnes from 548,000 tonnes in the previous season, while cotton fibre production fell to 215,450 tonnes from 229,479 from last time, said officials at CMDT.

"Weather disruptions caused the drop in production compared to last year, missing the target of 650,000 tonnes," said technical production advisor Ousmane Traore.

Late rains drenched crops in West Africa's biggest cotton producer, disrupting ginning in most regions in January and denting output.

West Africa's biggest cotton producer aims to increase cotton output to 750,000-800,000 tonnes next season. (Reporting By Tiemoko Diallo; Writing by Edward McAllister; Editing by Greg Mahlich)
