A United Kingdom-based firm, Plexus Cotton Limited, has commenced sensitisation campaign for the revival of the cotton production in the country.
The company, in collaboration with Nigerian-owned Synergy Cotton and Agro Allied Limited, held a seminar which centered on cotton value chain in the city of Kano.
The two firms took on the farmers on the need to bring back the cotton in realisation of the disposition of President Muhammadu BuhariΆs vision to revive the agriculture sector to create jobs.
Speaking at the event, chairman, Plexus Cotton, Mr Nick Earlam, lamented the downward progression of the country in cotton production, which he put at 900, 000 metric tonnes in the 60s to less than 45, 000 metric tonnes at present.
He said the worrisome trend has led to decline in textile industry and loss of jobs, which his company was set to redress, using technology and other incentives for farmers, all in a bid to add value to cotton.
