The Central Cotton Research Institute of Punjab said that 5.78 million acres of land have been brought under cotton crop cultivation against a target of 6 million acres in the province. Of those acres, 4.89 million consist of core areas of cotton crop.

Agriculture Punjab DG said that the decrease in area of the cotton crop is due to increase in area of sugarcane. Sugar cane has increased in area to 1.8 million acres this year compared to 1.5 million acres last year.

According to ICAC, Pakistan is the fourth largest cotton producer and consumer globally. The Pubjab region produces 80% of the nation's fiber.
