Cotton futures fell on Friday to their lowest level in nearly six months, pressured by a firm dollar and concerns over trade tariffs threatened by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, particularly against top consumer China.
* Cotton contracts for March (CTc1) fell 0.49 cent, or 0.7%, to 65.78 cents per lb at 12:23 p.m. ET (17:23 GMT), hitting its lowest level since Aug. 5. The contract ended the week with a loss of more than 2%.
* The dollar index, which measures the currency against six others, rose 0.1%. A stronger dollar makes greenback-priced cotton more expensive for overseas buyers.
* "It's a bearish market for cotton, with few friends. Right now, we're seeing people anticipate potential tariffs that the President continues to threaten on Mexico and Canada," said Jim Nunn, owner of Tennessee-based cotton brokerage Nunn Cotton.
* "You will probably have some new business show up down here at 60 or below 67 cents... The market's not going to rally until China becomes a buyer again of cotton."
* Earlier this week, the White House said U.S. president Donald Trump plans to hit Mexico and Canada with steep tariffs on Saturday while also considering some on China.
* Elsewhere, Chicago corn, soybean and wheat futures fell as looming U.S. tariffs against Canada and Mexico created uncertainty over trade repercussions and encouraged traders to book profits after rallies in grains this month.
* Oil prices were little changed but on course for weekly declines ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's Saturday deadline to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
* Lower oil prices make cotton-substitute polyester less expensive.
* The United States Department of Agriculture's weekly export sales report on Thursday showed net sales of upland cotton totaling 280,000 running bales (RB) for 2024/2025 were down 20% from the previous week, but up 20% from the prior 4-week average.
* The report further showed the exports sales of upland cotton at 153,500 RB were down 31% from the previous week and 19% from the prior 4-week average.
