LOME May 18 (Reuters) - Togo produced 108,000 tonnes of cotton in the 2016/17 season, up 33 percent from the previous season, the director of NSCT, the firm that oversees the industry, said on Thursday.

The West African country is targeting production of 160,000 tonnes for the 2017/18 season.

"These results... are the fruit of teamwork and cooperation among producers, which must be reinforced," Nana Nanfame said.

Both the area planted and the amount of cotton produced per hectare increased last year.

Togo's cotton production has stagnated at around 80,000 tonnes in recent years. It aims to recruit more farmers to boost production to 200,000 tonnes by 2022, Nanfame said.

By comparison, West Africa's top cotton grower Mali produced nearly 650,000 tonnes in 2016/17.
